Concerned about upgrade. I have 12 WIN2K Servers (3 DCs) I have 1 XCHG 2k Server it is PDC/GC/DNS Network is entirely WIN2K Server and XP Pro desktop. I have a brand new server just put WIN2K3 Enterprise and ready to do EXCHG2K3 Enterprise. New server will replace old Xchg box. Concerned about the install of XCHG2K3. Is there any damage that can be done running forest prep?

I had the same situation, your company sounds exactly like mine. I would bring up the new win2003 server. Run domain and forest prep (very easy will not have a major impact on your network) it will prepare you schema for the exchange2003 server. Once this is run install your exchange 2003 server. It will work side by side with your ex2k server(what is nice is no adc to worry about.) Create a mailbox on your new ex2003 server and see if you can send mail and recieve internally, and externally. If all is well i would suggest using the mailbox move utility and move mailboxes from your old exchange server to the new one. Once everyone is migrated over, shut down the old mail server. Just follow the white papers it isnt that hard to get up and running.

Thanks for the confirmation. Had everything all laid out and was at forestprep. Just an ease of mind for me.

Everything worked like a dream. One problem...Management wants the server renamed. It will be hosting our Intranet as well and they do not want the name xchg in it??? Is it easy enough to remove from site then uninstall and then rename server and then re-install? or is there more to it than that?
