So if there is no upgrade from x32 to x64 Windows, and Exchange 2000/2003 doesn't run on x64 Windows and Exchange 2007 doesn't run on x32, is Microsoft generally saying there will be no in-place upgrades.  I see everyone beating around the bush on this but I don't see an answer.  I've read hundreds of post here and other sites including Microsoft and all I see is about "Improved Migration Tools."  Will the migration tools come with an X64 server to perform this migration on?

From http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/preview/faq.mspx

"Microsoft is investing heavily in consolidating and improving migration tools so that the experience of moving from Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 to Exchange Server 2007 will be a smooth transition. In addition, Exchange Server 2007 will support mixed environments that include Exchange 2000 Server and/or Exchange Server 2003, allowing an easier and more gradual upgrade path. More detailed upgrade information and resources will be made available through this site and Exchange TechCenter later in 2006."

Since Exchange 2007 is still in beta 1, i think the dev team wishes to improve the main product first lets say getting exchange 2007 up to a RC level.

Indeed as far as I've seen there will be no IN-Place upgrades, but that does not mean you cannot upgrade your Exchange organization without loosing the configuration like connectors etc etc..

Patience can be a bitch... but I think it will be worth waiting for it..

There will be NO in-place upgrades.

Exchange 2000 and 2003 servers will simply see the Exchange 2007 servers as belonging to a different administrative group.  Mailbox moves will be possible between the groups.

The Exchange 2007 servers will also be in a 2007 routing group.  All mailboxes must first be moved from Exchange 5.5 to 2000 or 2003, and then subsequently moved from 2000/2003 to 2007.

The recommended migration process will be:

1) Decommission any Exchange 5.5 servers
2) Prepare Active Directory
3) Deploy Edge Server
4) Deploy Client Access Server
5) Deploy Hub Transport Server
6) Deploy Mailbox Server
7) Move resources from Exchange Server 2000 or Exchange Server 2003
8) Uninstall or decommission Exchange Server 2000 or Exchange Server 2003 from the Exchange organization
9) Remove connectors between Routing Groups and remove Routing Groups

(unless anything changes!)

10.

Hi!

Is there any possibility to migrate an existing Exchange 5.5 organisation to Exchange 2007, or is it a must to migrate to 2003 at first and then to 2007? Is it for example possible to leave an Exchange 2003 server hosting the ADC and acting as a directory bridgehead, install Exchange 2007 into the same routing group and move the mailbox from Exchange 5.5 at first to the Exchange 2003 server an then to the Exchage 2007 Server?

Thx

BOFH

You'll need to migrate all Exchange 5.5 Server to 2003 before you can deploy an Exchange 2007 server in your org. The Exchange org needs to be running in native mode, so no 5.5 servers must exist.

Hi, Henrik,

thank you for this fast answer. Where do you have this information from? I already searched for that in different MS sources including the BLOG.

Hi Bofh,

As an Exchange MVP we have certain benefits

Participating in the Exchange BETA Program, Rapid Deployment Program (RDP) and/or the Technology Adoption Program (TAP) will also provide you with info on this.

But hey there's only a little month until the Exchange 2007 Beta 2 will be released to the public, and in the documentation files you'll find a lot of info such as migration methods etc.
