Hi all,

Ive inherited a bit of a weird system. The mail used to be collected from a remote ISP, but the SBS with Exchange had been setup and the users on Outlook had an exchange mailbox set up...so the pop3 mail was collected from the remote ISP and then stored on the exchange server in their respective mailboxes.

They are now using a linux box to both receive and send their emails, so no pop3 collection and so on. They only had a dew users and it was far easy to administer a linux mail program and more importantly to back up individual MSG files than a full blown exchange server box.

The only problem is that if I leave the exchange account on thier outlook 2003 setups so that people can stil have access to their old mailboxes then ALL mail gets routed through the exchange server which is not what we want.

How do I tell Outlook 2003 or Exchange to route all mails through the new box.?

Just to be clear, are you asking about routing or storage? In other words, are you asking how to get the messages to follow a particular path, or asking how to get the messages to be stored on a different system?

You are talking about old mailboxes (and presumably old messages) like they are kept as an archive, and it sounds like you want new messages to be stored on your Linux server. Perfectly fine and configurable, but I am just trying to decide how to answer your question.

Hi there,

I want users to be able to access their 'old' exchange mailboxes but all future emails to be routed through the new linux box. If I set up an Exchange enabled account in Outlook then it defaults to sending mails through the exchange server. So its a routing question.

Eventually the Exchange server will be retired and mailboxes will be moved but this is a temporary measure until that can be effected. The move will be a storage question but I think I can achieve that using Thunderbird and then extracting all the single MSG files from the Thunderbird MBOX format.

Thanks for explaining. Are you needing to route inbound messages only, outbound messages only, or both? Now I'm trying to understand the scope of your question.

Outbound only, inbound are routed by NAT to the correct box.

What client do you use to connect to the Linux mailboxes? Are you using Outlook? Are you using the same Outlook profile to connect to both mailboxes?

Sorry for the delay in responding...UK time!

We are using Outlook 2003. It is the same profile with two defined accounts (I didnt think we'd be able to use two profiles and still get access to both at the same time).

Which is the primary mailbox defined in the Outlook profile? I've never configured one with the setup you describe. If making the Linux mailbox the primary doesn't force outbound mail to go to the Linux system, then I'd suggest that you export the Exchange mailbox to a PST file and remove the Exchange mailbox from the Outlook profile.
