Exchange 2000 is up and running, but on each machine I send a message using a newly created account it prompts for a username, password, and domain. If I enter the username and password, I never get prompted again.

If I cancel, the e-mail goes anyway, I just continue to get prompted with each e-mail sent.

First, is this normal?

Second, is there any way around this behavior?

What client are you using? Outlook? Are you using MAPI, POP3 or IMAP?
Is the client machine joined to the domain? If so, then you not get prompted in the domain is the same as the Exchange's domain.

The client is Outlook Express, so far with only POP3 accounts.

The client machines are remote and not joined to the domain.

After further testing, I seem to get this authentication request each time I reload Outlook Express.

I only get it once with Outlook, and it doesn't prompt again me after the first time.

Have you set 'remember password' in the Account Properties?

Sure have. All the pertinent info is already entered, which is why this is a little baffling...

I have found some info in previous posts regarding the the RPC binding order. The problem is similar, but not exactly the same.

It turns out this is an authentication problem, but I still have not found the root cause.

When I send mail using a computer on the LAN, it goes without hesitation. When I send from home, I still get the pop-up requesting Username/Password/Domain. If I enter my home ISP user info, it goes without problem...

Why?

Do you have "My outgoing server requires authentication" checked...if so, do you have the name/ password correct?
