We are still in the midst of migrating users over from an Exch 2003 to Exch 2010. Those 2 servers are in co-existence.

I want to start having our printers, backup server, etc. to send notification emails out via the exch 2010 server by means of smtp relay.

I have a test mailbox account on exch 2010. I set up OL 2010 on my workstation to set up a pop3 profile and use the exch 2010 as the outgoing mail server (smtp).

When I try to send an email out, I get an NDR "550 5.7.1 unable to relay"

I went into IIS 6 manager on the exch 2010 server and I see that the SMTP Virtual Server #1 is stopped. When I try to start it, I see event id 115 in the system log of Event viewer."the service could not bind instance 1. the data is the error code"

When I go into services, I see that SMTP service is started (although it is set to manual).

How do I fix this issue???

Hi,

I would create a dedicated receive connector on the 2010 server and then allow relay on this connector. On this connector you should also use IP restrictions (which servers/printers can use the connector) for added security

Exchange 2010 does not use the IIS smtp server so actually it shouldn't be installed
