We are looking at ways in which we can upgrade our e-mail server to a new server without having to keep the old server running to allow for MAPI profile referrals to be sent to the old server to point client to the new server. We are going to move from Exchange 2000, to a new box running Exchange 2003 using the move mailbox method. We deploy Office 2003 to all our desktops using group policy and the MST files created by the Office Custom installation wizard - which also sets the default e-mail server in the MAPI profile for new users to the old server name. I have thought that if we move the mailboxes, and then switch off (actually, properly uninstall and remove exchange 2000) then we could get around this referral issue by setting WINS/DNS entries that match the Netbios/DNS name of the old server, but point to the IP address of the new server. We have tried it and it seems to work. But this seems like very obvious, simple answer to this problem?
Is there a catch with this approach?

I've seen mail profiles corrupt doing it that way. Have you thought about upgrading Exchange on the existing server?

We have, but due to servers now becoming old spec we need to migrate to new hardware otherwise we would just go down the inplace upgrade path, which infact we will for our second exchange server. We have done some testing on this and as yet we're not able to find any issues with the WINS\DNS spoofing, but it just seems worryingly to obvious and simple to doà.
