I have 3 or 4 different UPN suffixes in my Windows 2003 domain (ie. companyA.com; companyB.com, etc).

The domain name is "companyA.com".

Users logging in to OWA using their companyA.com e-mail address can access their mailboxes.

Users trying to log in with any other suffix cannot log in. They cannot even log in using the downlevel name (companyA\username).

Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it?

The issue isn't with your UPN logons. I suspect your 'companyB' users also have smtp addresses that match their UPN's and the problem lies here.

OWA (OMA and EAS too) doesn't rely on your logon names for access, they use the user's SMTP domain. Your default /exchange folder will only give access to those with an email address in the '@companyA.com' SMTP domain.

A solution is to provide everyone with a '@companyA.com' secondary address. I use a syntax along the lines of:

alias_companyB@companyA.com

See my article HERE for a bit more detail.

I'm new to exchange 2003, and not absolutely
sure, but I recently read that you should defined in SMTP all domain names (corpA.com, CorpB.com, corpC.com)

You define all the SMTP domains your Exchange server will accept mail for in the Default Recipient Policy.

If I add "@companyB.com" to my default policy, do I have to turn on automatic generation? I don't want everyone to have a "companyB.com" email address.

Will the user be able to log in using their e-mail address or do they have to use the main SMTP domain address?

Thanks,
Marc

Hi Marc,

You can create additional recipient policies that filter only those users that will receive the addresses listed in that policy. But if you do this you should still include all the SMTP domains in the default recipient policy.

Don't mix UPNs with email addresses, they are quite different! MS seem to like telling people to create UPNs that look like email addresses and cause terrible confusion as a result. None of my UPNs look anything like my email addresses!

Whatever your UPNs look like, you log on with these. If they happen to look like the user's email address, well, I suppose they are easier to remember.

Cheers
