Using x509 certs with Exchange 5.5 - 17.Feb.2004 7:00:00 PM

I'm in the process of setting up Win 2003 with an enterprise CA (Microsoft's CA). I've set up various cert templates, and those are working fine.
I'd like to start using certs on my Outlook 2002 clients, but our Exchange server is still 5.5, and our e-mail administrator is completely balking at upgrading. It'll happen, but it'll take a lot longer than I wanted (1-year time frame, from our latest discussions).
In the meantime, I found an article on this web site, called "Implementing Email Security with Exchange 2003". I've followed the instructions on setting up the cert template, but it doesn't work when I try to enroll it - it tells me that the e-mail address is not part of the request, and the enrollment fails.
Since I'm not too familiar with any version of Exchange, I'd like to find out if this is possible, and if this error above is due to to the version of Exchange?
