Has anyone tried to virtualize the edge transport server on the same VMWare server that will be hosting the CAS/HT/UM/MB server roles? If so, anyone think this is a huge security risk since it is supposedly meant for a perimiter network? If so, are there ways to secure my deployment?

Properly implemented, with all the security precautions that VMware recommend the placement on ESX of Edge is ust as secure as on a physical. We see lots of people who have long since deployed CAS/HT/Edge on VMs. They're even happier now that they have a support roadmap!!

Wouldn't catch me doing it. Then you wouldn't catch me deploying Edge. Waste of time in my opinion. As far as I can tell, the only thing that Edge brings to the party is aggregated safe sender lists. Nothing else. I can achieve all of the other benefits of Edge using third party products for much less than the cost an Exchange 2007 license. As for security, that depends whether you need the air gap or not to achieve security. If your VMWARE system gets compromised (and I am lead to believe that it is a key area that is being targetted for a security compromise) then everything on the same system is open. Simon.

Awesomeness...great to hear cause I have a test VMWare ESX server and would hate having to put the Edge Transport server on another physical box just to prepare for the Exchange exams. I still have to take my VMWare Certified Professional exam too. My brain hurts... Thanks alot guys. I appreciate it. :-)

I have virtualized our exchange over 1 year ago to ESX and it works fine. I split up EDGE/CAS/HT to different virtual boxes. works really fine. even the openbsd firewall is running on a VM ;-) for disaster recovery i create daily backups to another (old) esx server using the free version of the trilead VM Explorer (http://www.trilead.com/Products/VM_Explorer/)
