My company put me in charge of revamping teh Exchange environment. I am looking to implement Exchange 2007 cluster. I have heard several people debating about virtualizing Exchange 2007 with VMWare ESX. Have anyone virtualize Exchange 2007 cluster or have an opinion on this? I know microsoft do not recommend virtualize and do not provide support in a virtual environment. Thanks

I've only virtualized E2K7 CCR/SCC in lab environments but have virtualized all E2K7 server roles except the UM role in real production environments Typically I recommend customers (with more than 1000 users) to not virtualize mailbox servers (clustered or not), but the other roles seems to work fine from a performance perspective (if you size the servers properly that is). Also, remember the support statement from MS in regards to virtualizing Exchange servers: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320220.

I installed the Windows 2008 Enterprise with AD (around 150 users) + Exchange 2007 in to a VMServer 2.0. Everthing working fine. My server got 16GB of RAM. I only assign 8GB RAM for exchange 2007. It is easy to backup and maintain. Something go wrong (hardware, burn totally). just use the backup VMimage and run it on another machine. It only take 15mins downtime. good for small company. The whole AD, DNS and exchange will recover like nornal.

I'm currently running an Exchange 2007 Hub, etc... and my Edge server using VMware ESX 3.5 and VIC 2.5 Around 300 users, and lots of heavily used public folders. Sitting at 2GB of memory and 1 CPU for each Exchange VM client.Outlook is running in cached mode. Not one pip out of users during my migrations from Exchange 2003 physical boxs to Exchange 2007 running on VMware.
