Hi,

Its possible to install E2K7 in enviroment of one DC running under W2K and Exchange 2K without upgrading the DC to W2K3.

Hi,
You have to have at least one WIn 2003 DC in the domain. I was in the same situation so I made the Exchange 2007 server a DC before installing Exchange. Its against best practices, but it gets the job done in a small environment.

Owk, so the DC thing is cleared up....
Now i got a question about MIXED and NATIVE mode.
I am planning a transmition from Exchange 6.5 to 2007. Rightnow i have only Windows2000 servers on the network and recently added a few Windows2003 servers as DC's.
Is it possible to leave AD in mixed-mode and do the transition?
I am planning the functional level upgrade to Windows2003.

hi,

The following are the requirements for the network and the directory servers in your Exchange 2007 organization:
  • The domain controller that is the schema master must have Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or a later version installed. (By default, the schema master runs on the first Windows Server 2003 domain controller installed in a forest.)
  • You must have at least one global catalog server in every Active Directory directory service site where you plan to install Exchange 2007. This global catalog server must be running Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version. Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version is required for the following reasons:

    • Windows Server 2003 SP1 and later versions support Exchange 2007 service notifications. When a configuration change occurs in Active Directory, a notification is sent to the service. Several Exchange 2007 services use this notification. The notification mechanism in Windows Server 2003 SP1 and later versions is an improvement over the notification mechanism in Windows 2000 Server.
    • Windows Server 2003 SP1 and later versions allow users to browse the address book in Microsoft Outlook Web Access.
    • Windows Server 2003 SP1 and later versions provide the ability to look up distribution list membership in a more efficient manner than in Windows 2000 Server.

  • In each domain, including child domains, where you plan to run Setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions, you must have at least one domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version. Setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions will not complete successfully if it cannot find at least one domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version.
  • In each domain, including child domains, where you plan to install Exchange 2007, you must have at least one domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version.
  • If you have any domain controllers that are running Windows 2000 Server, when you prepare Active Directory and domains for Exchange 2007 and when you install Exchange 2007, you must run Setup.com from a Command Prompt window, and you must use the /DomainController parameter to specify a domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version.

Thx for that, but i already knew that.
So you tell me that the AD can stay in mixed mode, als long as there are no Previous Windows Servers (like NT4) or Exchange Servers (5.5) are installed?

now if you see the statement

In each domain, including child domains, where you plan to run Setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions, you must have at least one domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version. Setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions will not complete successfully if it cannot find at least one domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version.

If you see the above statement We require atelast one windows 2003 in each domain.

And if you see this
If you have any domain controllers that are running Windows 2000 Server, when you prepare Active Directory and domains for Exchange 2007 and when you install Exchange 2007, you must run Setup.com from a Command Prompt window, and you must use the /DomainController parameter to specify a domain controller that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version.

so conclusion is we can have mixed mode but there should be one windows 2003 domain controller
