One of our clients decided to switch from MDaemon to Exchange server. Currently they have around 500 email users. 20% of all their users are using Outlook 2003 and the rest are using WorldClient (kind of OWA for MDaemon) web interface. Company management would like to make their purchasing decision on Exchange server now. Should they wait a bit and spend their money on new Exchange 2007 or stick with 2003? If Exchange 2003 will be roll out now it means that Exchange 2007 will be on they decision agenda only after few years. Even thou I don’t have any practical experience with new Exchange 2007 server yet, they asked my opinion about waiting on Exchange 2007. What do you think I should tell them? Thanks in advance.

The infrastrucure planning advice I am giving is to: 1) Purchase servers that will support 64 bit (almost all do now) and make sure you get things working in the lab environment FIRST. Even though Ex2003 only runs on 32 bit, it would be nice to have hardware available to migrate to 64 bit. 2) Not very impressed with the Beta2 management console. Other people will differ. I am waiting to see the released product to make sure managament will be less work, not more. 3) With 500 users, you could co-exist a 2003 and 2007 environment, depending on the features you want to offer to other users. 4) If you do decide to go with 2003, purchase it with Software assurance to be entitled to the 2007 upgrade (servers and clients) 5) Maybe wait for Service Pack 1. Let the early adopters figure it all out first. IMHO

ORIGINAL: dloweqsc 1) Purchase servers that will support 64 bit (almost all do now) New hardware for Exchange 2003 has been purchased already. I think it is a dual XEON with 4GB of RAM and RAID1 and RAID5 SCSI controllers. Keep in mind that company has 500 users. Probably half of them will be connected at using Exchange server at the same time. Public folders will not be heavily utilize, manly OWA and group to-do and calendars. quote:
2) Not very impressed with the Beta2 management console. It is look like experience Exchange 2003 admins don't really like new user interface at all. Microsoft is probably trying to impress unix geeks with new and powerful Exchange shell console. "Look at us, we can do lots of crazy stuff from command line too…” I even heard somewhere that unix gurus were employed by Microsoft to develop new shell console for Exchange 2007. Maybe it is just a rumor. I can imagine on how many accidental mistakes will be made in the future by not so "unix-switch” Exchange admins.quote:
3) With 500 users, you could co-exist a 2003 and 2007 environment, depending on the features you want to offer to other users. Company refuses the plan on installing Exchange 2003 now and installs additional Exchange 2007 later. They are happy to wait a month or two for Exchange 2007 and then have "one box” only. Questions they asked, is that really worst to wait for Exchange 2007? They simply don't want to have double headaches. First migrate from MDaemon to Exchange 2003 and later on migrate (again) to Exchange 2007. quote:
4) If you do decide to go with 2003, purchase it with Software assurance to be entitled to the 2007 upgrade (servers and clients) They already purchased Exchange 2003 Enterprise license with software assurance plan. quote:
5) Maybe wait for Service Pack 1. Let the early adopters figure it all out first. I think that SP1 for Exchange 2007 will not be release soon. Company will not wait a year for that to happen.

I would agree that it would be wise to wait for SP1 or later. The configuration interface is very poor and doesn't expose anywhere near the functionality that Exchange 2003 does. Unless you want to impress your UNIX friends with your typing skills, you're best to stick with a more "Microsoft" like product (i.e., easy to use) and go with Exchange 2003. You might want to look at Kerio too -- they support Windows Mobile now and it's much MUCH easier to use and configure than Exchange 2007. Tom
