OK here's the deal. We had Exchange 2003 running on a server that was running server 2000. Our domain/AD was windows 2000 as well. Last Tuesday I upgraded the 1st domain controller to server 2003. Everything went as planned. About 12 hours later I upgraded the 2nd domain controller. Everything went as planned. The next morning I upgraded the exchange server OS to server 2003. Exchange is working, however, there are a few odd things going on with it. When you open the Exchange System Manager you can navigate normally until you bring up the mailboxes. Before the upgrade it took about 3 seconds to bring up about 1200 mailboxes. Now it takes about 3 minutes. Also, SMTP just quits working just long enough to drop a message. I don't get anything on the Exchange server, just a undeliverable on my AS400. Everything else is working perfectly. I am totally stumpped and any pointers/advice will be more than greatly appreciated. Nate

Hiya nate, what sort of output do you get from running DCDIAG? Also is there anything odd in the Event Logs? Cheers A

Hey! Thanks for the reply! I have no errors in the event logs on dc1, dc2, or exchage server. I did a DCDIAG against both domain controllers and everything passes. I have also ran all the different tests in the Exchange Server Best Practices Analyzer tool and I get no critical errors. I do get a few warnings that are not severe enough to cause problems with the exception of one. It says " An error occurred during round-trip calculation between Exchange server tjsexch01.tjsamson.org and Active Directory server timeser.tjsamson.org. The ping command returned the error '11010'." This error doesn't come up everytime I run a test. It is random. I hope this helps you understand better.

Hiya mate, are these machines on the same site, and are their network cards configured with the lastest drivers and configured properly in regard to duplex settings? Cheers A

Yes all three of the servers are at the same physical site. Actually, on the same switch. Yes, I have downloaded the server 2003 drivers for my network cards and I have them forced to 100mbs full. Hope that helps. Nate

Ok, this might sound like an odd request but, I came across this once on an inplace upgrade. On your DC's can you access your DNS zone data ok? Cheers A

Cool, the reason why I asked is that in one upgrade I did AD was fine as was Exchange but I could not access the zone data. You have 2 DC's - are they both GC's and have the been rebooted since the Exchange Server was upgraded? Also if they have has the Exchange server been booted as well. (Just trying to eliminate NSAPI issues). Cheers A

I really apprecite your help! Both DC's are GC's. Origonally only DC1 was a GC, but I came across something that suggested that both DC's could be GC's, so I made DC2 a GC as well. Everything has been rebooted at least twice since all the upgrades.

Ok mate, lets this from another angle - I have to admit at the moment I am focusing on the mailbox retrieval time (working on the idea that the same problem is causing issues with SMTP). How does the mailbox retrieval time perform if you install the Exchange management tools on a local workstation? Cheers A

I shut down my antivirus on Exchange and that had no noticeable affect what so ever. Our AS400 guy finally retrived an error this weekend off the AS400. I will paste in below. MIME-Version: 1.0 From: GGOBLE@TJSAMSON.ORG To: dcaudel@tjsamson.org,pwing@tjsamson.org Date: Mon, 05 Nov 2007 03:23 -0600 Message-Id: <40037020071105032359022000@TJSAMMS4.TJSAMSON.ORG> Subject: LATE CHARGE REPORT - IV Content-type: multipart/mixed; boundary="GGOBLE____40037003235911050701" This message contains an attachment in MIME format, which is not legible to your E-mail application. --GGOBLE____40037003235911050701 Content-type: text/plain; charset=Windows-1252 I believe that this problem is totally different from the one I am having about the mailboxes coming up really slow. I'm going to do some more research on this MIME error.

Awesome, I was thinking NIC in an earlier post - but only around Duplex. Really chuffed (happy) that you got it working. Cheers
