We use Symantec Antivirus for Exchange, and I configured the spam filter to deliver email it identifies as spam, to a special administrators mailbox I set up, instead of deleting the mail it identifies as spam. This way, I can look at all the ôspamö email to make sure there are no false positives, and I can then deliver them to the intended recipient if I do find a false positive. IÆve noticed something lately in the spam mail that has me thoroughly confused;

Although most of the spam is addressed to real Active Directory recipients ô@mydomain.comö àsome of the spam is addressed to recipients that donÆt even exist in my Active Directory, and donÆt have mailboxes on my Exchange server (for example: ôfake.name@mydomain.comö). This is odd, because I checked the ôfilter recipients who are not in the directoryö option on my Exchange server, which I though would prevent this from happening.

Stranger yet, some of the spam is addressed to people at domains that are not mineàdomains for which no recipient policy exists on my Exchange server (example: ôfake.name@made_up_domain.comö).

Does anybody have a clue what might be causing this, and how to stop it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Go to your System Manager for Exchange, Global settings- Message delivary properties and check mark the box "filter recipients who are not in directory" under recipient filter tab.
