Hi Guys, I am fairly new to setting up Exchange 2003 with OWA. I am able to send email with the exchange server, it is setup with an smtp connector, I just need to know what ports i must open for the mail to come in, I assume 25 smtp, 110 pop3, 80 http, I Have done this but I get no mail. What else needs to be opened, I have pointed these 3 to the server IP. The other thing I cant get going in OWA, What ports need to be open for this ? and is there additional setup that needs to be done to be able to type in the external ip of the server then \exchange eg. mail.domainname.com\exchange Thanks for any help guys, I have setup many servers and exchange with NT4 but I can get my head around this yet. In order for other SMTP Servers to deliver mail to your Exchange server nothing else but port 25/TCP (SMTP) needs to be opened. For external clients to be able to pull POP3 or IMAP4 mail from your server, open port 110/TCP and 143/TCP respectively (if you don't have remote users using either POP3 or IMAP4 don't open these ports).
For OWA to work all that is required is port 80/TCP (HTTP), but it's strongly recommended you implement SSL, when/if you do port 443/TCP (HTTPS) will need to be opened.
If you don't receive mail you could try to see if you can make a telnet connection to your Exchange server on port 25, this should be done from an external client where you open a command prompt and type:
Telnet Exchange_server_name_or_IP 25

Thanks guys I have the ports open but no mail, the mx was updated to point to the external IP of the router. I have done a port scan on the d-link router and all ports show up as stealth, does this mean they cant see if the port is open or not ? I scanned another setup with a different router and I can see the ports are open, and the emails work there. does stealth mean the ports are closed ? I also cannot get remote desktop or owa to work, IIS is running, all web sites in there by default are un assigned (IP) I have granted access on the sites to everyone, but no luck, thanks for help guys.

I have gotten a little further with my problems. I still cant receive email, the MX record is correct. I have done a port scan on the router and all ports are in stealth mode, I also tried to telnet to port 25 but this does not connect, so it seems to me that there is something blocking the ports. I can telnet to the server internally to port 25. I tried a different router to see if the one I have was faulty, opened the ports, but no mail, and no telnet connection. There is no firewall running, other than the router. I installed exchange after the server installation, it was not done at the same time, is there any reasong this would cause a problem. As I said I can send email externally and I can send and receive email internally so to me exchange seems to be running correctly. I ran the internet connection wizard to configure exchange and this worked fine, it was setup with the correct domain and so on. This has got me stuffed. I have been onto the ISP to see if they have the ports blovcked, they are looking into it for me, as they think they should b open but the guy I was talking to was unsure. Is there anything on the server side of things that would cause this non connection ?
