I'm trying to understand how Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2007 Autodiscover services interacts. - Does autodiscover service provide name of mailbox server for outlook profile? If so then, why I'm able to "Check Name" (resolve name and id) on Outlook profile setup page even though I stopped web service on my CAS which is not on my mailbox server. I don't get "Disconnected" error when I stop W3SVC on my CAS. I do get failure when I download OAB and I can understand that. - If I move my mailbox to different mailbox server, do I need to run "repair" to update name of Exchange server or does it get updated automatically. (assuming autodiscover process updates name of Exchange server) - How do I know that autodiscovery process is run when I restart Outlook. Thanks.

Autodiscover isn't the only way that Outlook can connect to the Exchange server. The old methods work as well, so if you enter the servername and mailbox name manually and then choose Check Name then that will work, using MAPI. Autodiscover is just a way of getting the information to the server. If you move the mailbox to another server then Outlook will be updated automatically. That is a MAPI feature, not an Autodiscover feature. Obviously if the new location has different information then that will be updated by Autodiscover process, completely transparently to the user. Simon.
