Hi,

I'm running Exchange 5.5 SP4, but for the last couple of hours the CPU utilization has been running at 100%. Due to the process associated with updsvc.exe which is taking up about 95% of the CPU. Does anyone know what this is, and why it has taken over my CPU?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know.

Go to Services, look for something like Update Service. Are you running the MS Automatic Update Service or whatever its called, that polls the internet and automatically updates hotfixes etc..

I couldn't find anything in the services that was even close. But we had logged on to Microsoft.com recently and were going to test for automatic updates but it failed and told us we could not use the update facility. I'd say that this might be linked to it, and maybe I should bite the bullet and just stop this process?

I shut the process down fine and nothing blew up. I was just surprised that I could not get an answer on Microsoft or Google as to what this updsvc.exe was.

Thanks

I believe updsvc.exe is the Windows Update service. It is the automatic checker that can be installed on the machine to let you know when updates are available and runs as a service all the time.

I haven't seen it take 95% of the processor, but it sounds like it had run amok.
