What is the purpose for X.500 addresses. What are they used for in Exchange? What functionality do they provide? What happens when they are missing or incorrect?

X.500 is typically used for legacy issues. If your Exchange environment has been around since version 5.5 (or if you still have 5.5 running), then it is more likely that it is included in your Recipient Policies. Exchange 5.5 relied upon the X.400 protocol, and when you did things like rename a user, the X.500 was commonly used to keep the old X.400 "alias" alive so that people responding to old messages still were able to have the messages delivered.

Do you still have 5.5 in your environment? Are you experiencing any issues?
