I'm required to upgrade our Exchange 5.5 server that currently replicates our GAL with another site in the same Org.
Unfortunately our recent AD upgrade using Win2003 server is not within the same org as previous and I'm a little concerned with the GALs between sites.
If I proceed to build a new Exchange 2003 server, migrate all PFs and Mailboxes but leave the Exchange 5.5 server running, will the GALs still be available to my users???
You can make the assumption that I'll move all mailboxes and public folders from the 5.5 server to the 2003. I'm interested to know that if I leave the 5.5 server running, will this mean it will continue to replicate with the other site but still be GAL visibility for all my new 2003 users? My user will be using Outlook XP/2003.

I have the intention of eventually replicating GALs between Exchange 2003 in different orgs using MIIS with Feature Pack, but I have to wait until the other site also upgrade to EX2003.

All responses appreciated!

Thanks

Hi,

You don't need to keep the old 5.5 server in your site running but there must be an ADC connection agreement between your AD and each site in the 5.5 organization to keep the GAL's synchronized. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q303180

Leif,

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, not sure I explained myself correctly.
In our Exchange 5.5 environment, both sites are apart of the same org, thus they can replicate GALs. Unfortunately our business in not part of the other AD forest and we will no longer have any relationship between our Orgs.
So basically we'll end up with a new Exchange 2003 running on its own AD forest. I believe the only way to rectify this issue is to use MIIS Feature PAck to allow the GALs replication between separate AD forests.
In reading the link you provided, my understanding is that if I setup a 2-way connection agreement between my ex2003 and ex55 boxes, then essentially the answer is yes, I can still maintain visibility of my replicated GAL as long as the ex55 is still running?

So, the replicated GAL from ex55 will always be visible to all my ex2003 users so long as I keep and ex55 running and replicating with the external ex55 server and that I maintain a 2-way connection agreement between my ex55 and AD?

Thanks again

Hi,

You don't need to keep the 5.5 server running. When you install the first exchange 2003 server in your site it will install the SRS service. This is a 5.5 emulator and therefore the ADC connection agrements can point to this server.

Thanks again for the reply.

My understanding is that in order for two 5.5 servers in different sites to replicate GALs, they must be within the same Exchange Organisation. Given that I've now upgraded to AD and I'm part of a different AD organisation, won't this mean I can't keep replicating GAL's unless I use something like MIIS?
I'm trying to work out if I can still maintain the GAL replication if I leave the 5.5 servers in both sites running. Then I'd setup ADC to talk between my ex5.5 and my ex2003 servers.
Essentially both ex5.5 servers in each site will continue to replicate GAL's and my new ex2003 should still gain access to the GAL's using ADC.
But will this actually work?

Sorry for the confusion.
