Hey Guys,

We are shortly going to implement exchange 2007.  We currently have exchange 2003 with 3 storage groups.

I want to provide a failover server for our roles. I have been doing some research into CCR and attempted to implement it on a test domain. This is what I understood from  my results.

You need two servers for CCR using the mailbox role and this server can only host the mailbox role.
So this means I will have to purchase another server to provide Hub role and CAS.
But if that server fails then it’s all down.

It all seems very expensive. What the best way of doing this?

My question maybe unclear, please ask me any questions.
Thanks,
Tom

HA is expensive.
Unless you have a directed business imperative, with funding, then you will find the requirements to put an HA solution in place expensive.

OTOH, if the boss wants it, and is willing to pay of it, then you are on the right track.  Two matching servers for the CCR, and then HA, done right, will have two CAS/HT colocated servers.  Of course, you can always split the CAS and HT onto their own server, and then you will be up to needing six servers.
Oh, and don't forget to plan the CAS/HT load balancing.
I like failover hardware-based LB.
Enjoy!

thomasrobbins dont forget that CCR exchange does not require a SAN.
compared to clustering Exchange 2003, there is a cost savings and a smaller TCO.

With windows 2008 and Hyper-v you can cluster exchange 2007 virtually because hyper-v supports 64bit.
With the right hardware  2 physical servers could run 4 vitual servers
Node A = exchange 1 ccr  |  exchange hub-clientaccess 1
Node B = exchange 2 ccr  | exchnage hub-clientaccess 2

you would still need a 3rd server for the edge transport but the hardware requirements are not as high.

Just a thought. ;-)
