I ask this because I was reading that WDS 4 is going to "Online e-mail index improvements to drastically reduce the indexing footprint on Microsoft Exchange Server" We occasionally (ok, about every 2 weeks) experience a situation where all of a sudden Outlook loses connection to mail server. We have also noticed a gradual slowing of mail at times before this occurs. We saw that during this time (and it's usually at peak mail times (early, primarily before and after lunch, and occasionally around 4:30) that according to the performance monitor, RPC requests were off the charts. Now could that be because something else is wrong and therefore RPC connections are stacking up or is it just a lot of darn RPC requests at that time. All we know is that if we fail the server (whichever one it is) over to the standby server then all is well again. Anyway, saw the WDS info and thought it may have something to do with it.. (but this would probably be too easy) Thanks for any insight!! Server 2003 SP2 Exchange 2007 Enterprise SP1 32 GB RAM Dual, Dual Core Dell 2950 2+1 Cluster (SCC) -Prod

The key question is whether your clients are in cached mode or not. If they are, then it isn't WDS that is causing the problem. Do ensure that you have the latest NIC drivers on the machine - particularly if you are using Broadcom NICs. Simon.

Our users are NOT running in cached mode at all. All 6700 of them are running in Online mode. The Broadcom NIC have also been remediated....

Well. 6700 all accessing the servers live - I am not surprised you are getting spikes. WDS would be one of the areas to investigate, I believe it does a full index at that time period. I have certainly seen WDS bring a server to its knees in the past. Google's desktop search can do the same thing. This was written by the Exchange team for Exchange 2003, I would expect it to apply to Exchange 2007 as well as you aren't using cached mode: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2005/08/22/409610.aspx Simon.
