Is there any webcasts going over this? I am very confused about what to update, where to get the patches. I am on the MS site and it is very confusing, it looks like more tools are being developed as they go along? My company is not even XP SP1 in some cases, this is a real mess for me.

You have to go SP1 for Windows 2003 and atleast SP1 for Exchange 2003.

They are already talking about SP3 for Exchange 2003 and SP2 for Windows 2003.

Yes, it is bit confusing this DST thing, but I think all will be clear very soon.

I think in preparation I will start patching up all my servers overnight however my real fear is the client end. Outlook and XP. Especially If I need to get everyone on SP2. We are just not equipt for that.

I would say 300 or so, they are scattered though. We have many 1 PC locations all connected via DSL. I am looking into landesk to help manage all this but I have to do a good convincing job because of the cost. In the meantime, this happens.

For 1 PC locations send out SP2 CD's.

And for others use the GPO.

Year ago, I did about 1500 PCs via GPO over WAN links and about 300 PC's in headoffice.  The results were great and 98% PCs were upgraded to SP2 XP and rest required some troubleshooting.

Call me crazy, but I could swear I recently installed a patch that addressed the DST issue from Microsoft Update....

Quick question:
In my current environment we have an Exchange 2003 SP1 server with 80% of our users on it and a new Exchange 2003 SP2 server with 20%.  We are moving all users to the new server.  My question is this, if we apply the Exchange patch to the SP2 server then move a mailbox from the SP1 server to the SP2 server will their calendars show the correct time for meetings?  Or will they need to be updated?

Thanks in advance.

Joe

I would suggest you to to move ALL users to your new box first and then do a complete backup and then apply patches accordingly as advised by Microsoft.

So, apparently Microsoft made the client DST tool critical last night.  Someone please tell me I'm wrong here.

If this really is true, anyone have any idea what to do for those of us who don't trust the Exchange patches enough yet to install them immediately?

According to Microsoft's own documentation, the client patch, server patch and exchange patch should all be installed as close together as possible to avoid an issue with appointments that are correctly done from a patched machine.

nderdog,

You mean KB931836 is set to critical state????  Any link you can provide?  Because I still don't see this in my WSUS as my WSUS is confgirued to download the crtical updates???

KB926666 is still an issue, lucky are those who did not get affected by this.

I am still waiting.

Isn't that a server update?  It's the client update they apparently have pushed, although you'd never know it from everything I've seen on Microsoft's site, and none of the updates listed actually mention it.  They semi-casually mentioned in the webcast yesterday that they would make the client critical last night, which makes sense, since the next normal windows update is March 13, so short of an emergency update, this was the last chance.  I just don't like how the information is so hard to find on the MS site, considering how big of a deal this is.

I just keep hoping that since they haven't actually said they've pushed it that I misunderstood or imagined hearing it yesterday.

Here's what I did in the wee hours of the morning before anyone came in to the office:

Did this simultaneously on my FE, BE, and BES (Blackberry) servers (all running Server 2003 SP1 and Exchange 2003 SP2)...

- Installed update KB928388. (I didn't know 931836 had been released today.)
- Installed update KB916803.
- Installed update KB912442.
- Installed update KB926666.

All in succession without rebooting any of the servers.  Everything went off without a hitch and my stores came up immediately.  So far I can report that we've had no problems whatsoever.  Granted, we went through the whole "Send As" issue with BES, but that was easily fixed.

EDIT: And I just checked, 931836 is part of the critical update package.

Thank you for posting your results NTElvin.

How did you fix the SEND AS issue with the BES?  RIM has a "SET SEND As Permission Tool", did you use this?

I didn't use the tool provided by RIM, I just went over KB912918 and applied the following...

quote:

To grant Send As for a single account on all user accounts in an Active Directory domain or container, follow these steps:

1.
Start the Active Directory Users and Computers management console.

2.
On the View menu, make sure that the Advanced Features option is selected. If this option is not selected, the Security page will not be visible for domain and container objects.

3.
Open the properties of the domain or container, and then click the Security page.

4.
Click the Advanced button.

5.
If the account that needs permission is not already listed, click Add, and then select the account. Otherwise double-click the account for editing.

6.
In the Applies Onto list, click User Objects.

7.
Grant the account Send As permission.

8.
Click OK until you have exited and saved all changes.

... and this:

quote:

Verify that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account has the correct permissions.

Note If the account is within a domain, make sure that the account is a member of only the Domain Users group. On a domain controller, the account should be member of the Built-in Administrators group.

1.
On the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, follow these steps:

a.
Make sure that the account is a member of the Local Administrators Group.

b.
Assign "Log on Locally" and "Log on as a Service" permissions to the account.

2.
Grant Exchange View-Only Administrator permissions at the administrative group level. To do this, follow these steps:

a.
In Exchange System Manager, right-click the first Exchange Server administrative group name, and then click Delegate Control.

b.
Notice that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account is listed as having the role of Exchange View-Only Administrator.

3.
Grant "Send As," "Receive As," and "Administer Information Store" permissions at the server level for each Exchange Server server. To do this, follow these steps:

a.
In Exchange System Manager, right-click the first Exchange Server administrative group name, and then expand the Servers group.

b.
Right-click an Exchange Server server, click Properties, and then click Security. Repeat this step for each server in the Servers group.

c.
In the top pane, select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account. In the bottom pane, make sure that the "Send As," "Receive As," and "Administer Information Store" permissions are set to Allow.

d.
Repeat steps 3b and 3c for each Exchange Server server.

4.
Grant "Send As," "Receive As," and "Administer Information Store" permissions to the mailbox store. To do this, follow these steps:

a.
In Exchange System Manager, right-click the first Exchange administrative group name, and then expand the Servers group.

b.
Expand the first mailbox store group, right-click each mailbox store, click Properties, and then click Security. Repeat this step for each server in the Servers group.

c.
In the top pane, select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account. In the bottom pane, make sure that the "Send As," "Receive As," and "Administer Information Store" permissions are set to Allow.

d.
Repeat steps 4b and 4c for each mailbox store on each Exchange Server server.

5.
In the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, follow these steps:

a.
Right-click the user for which you want to add permissions, and then click Properties.

b.
On the Security tab, add the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account, and then click to select the Send As and the Receive As check boxes.

I then stoped the Blackberry Router service on my BES  for about 25 minutes and then started it up again.  In all it took about 45 minutes to get BES working again.
