I hope this doesn't double post as my initial one seems to have dissapeared. My mail server crashed a while back. It might as well have caught fire. The SCSI controller took a dump and all was lost. On tape I have the two exchange directories that were on that server. Our support department kept their email box on it. From looking at the tape I don't see anything like a .pst or anything I'm familiar with. I hope this was not stored in something like documents and settings or something like that as I have no back up of that. Can anyone give me a clue?

You have a backup of the Exchange server, with the Exchange system files on it. The server runs a full database and transaction logs system, it couldn't ever rely upon such a flaky store as a PST for the mailing engine.
It sounds like you have very little experience of the structure of an Exchange server, in which case you are probably going to struggle retoring this server to production use without lots of reading or lots of help from an experienced person. I'm not trying to put you down, I'm just being honest - Exchange is pretty complex, especially when it comes to things like Disaster Recovery.
Have a look at http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/techinfo/administration/55/backuprestore.asp as a starter.

No offense taken. I hate this stuff and I never asked to do it. My company fired our network admin and handed the job to me. I guess you are telling me I'm SOL?
What type of transaction system is used in this?
