I have discovered that there appears to be a difference between populating the AD User Email field on the 'General' tab of a user account with an email address vs. right clicking a user account - doing 'exchange tasks' and choosing 'Establish Email Address'. When I pick the Establish Email Exchange task mail is delivered normally. When I only populate the user email account field in AD and send a message I get the following error:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: Testing Stuff
Sent: 7/26/2004 2:17 PM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

so and so on 7/26/2004 2:18 PM
The message could not be delivered because the recipient's destination email system is unknown or invalid. Please check the address and try again, or contact your system administrator to verify connectivity to the email system of the recipient.

I can successfully recreate this problem and I'm not sure what the deal is. It would appear that Exchange does not use the User Email property from AD but rather only it's own email field when determining delivery destination. I hope this can be fixed otherwise I've got a problem because we pre-populated our entire AD users accounts with their email addresses in the AD User Email Address field. We can not pre-populate this information in Exchange due to not having it installed in our domain yet.

Anyway - thats the problem I've been having and have not had any luck googling for answers. Any help you might have would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Basically you need to create Exchange Mailboxes for all of these users. When you add the email field, you don't create the mailbox. Basically the AD is acting as a listing of contact info for that user. This address is populated automatically when you create the mailbox for the user.

Highlight all of the users in AD Users & Computers and right click... choose exchange tasks..
create mailbox.
Aliases will be auto set, so you will want to check the smtp addresses.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately we are migrating users from one system to another gradually (Not Exchange to Exchange). So, we'll have a whole bunch of people who need to show up in the address list but not yet have mailboxes. We have figured out how to include users in the address lists - but when it tries to send to these users it fails - unless we go back and mail-enable (not mailbox enable) them via Exchange tasks. Make sense?
