I'm new to the Exchange World and the Windows 2003 Server, formerly a Domino Administrator in an AS/400 and Unix environment, so please forgive this post if it is a stupid question.

Is the Whitelist/Blacklist a function of Exchange or Symantec? Where can I find info on the MSEC GWY?

The native Exchange 2003 antispam features are very basic and are rarely enough in order to fight spam today, therefore I recommend you invest in a 3rd party solution such as GFI MailEssential/MailSecurity or Symantec Mail Security.

It's very good. I have it deployed in a number of locations, not least at home. I've just switched to Sybari Antigen as my main home system but that decision was nothing to do with the competency of Mail Essentials & Mail Security.
A lot of it depends on your budget and what you want to get out of the product in the way of extras such as auto replies for departed workers, disclaimers etc.

I like GFI's MailEssentials/MailSecurity bundle too, especially the new 10.0 version. I used it in several messagin environments as well. Currently I testdrive Symantec Mail Security, and though I like it's 100 web-based I still like GFI better.

I'll definitely take a look at the GFI. In the meantime, however, I am stuck with the configuration I have walked into (with no turnover). There are existing blacklists and whitelists somewhere, but I don't know where to look. I have looked thoroughly in our firewall (Watchguard) and can't find anything. I strongly suspect it is somewhere in the Symantec email security for Exchange.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Henrik, would you say GFI is the best out there? even better than Mcafee, CA and Norton products?

As a antispam/antivirus solution for SMTP/Exchange I would say it's better than the other vendors you mentioned.

There is a whitelist feature in Symantec Mail Security for Exchange 4.5. You need to access the Configuration > Spam Prevention settings menu. You might also want to check the Filtering SubPolicy. This can be accessed from Policies > Standard Policy > Filtering Subpolicies.
