I am backuping up exchang using the native NTbackup then backing up the flat file to tape. What features does using the agent for exchange 2003 offer. I have a 2003 exchange server in a mixed mode domain with one nt4 bde and nt4 file and printer server. Can I use the exchange agent in a mixed mode domain? The previous exchange server was 5.5 we bought a new server installed 2003 and migrated the user mailboxes over.

Well exchange agent usually allows you to do separate mailbox restores. They used to call it brick layer. Basically if you have a corrupted mailbox or accidently deleted it you would not have to restore the whole database, the agent allows you to access individual mailboxes and just restore the single mailbox.

Check out this document and read the brick level section

Of course now with Exchange 2003, you have a recovery storage group, you can restore the whole store to a separate backup storage group and then use tools like exmerge to recover separate boxes, a little more work but worked like a charm for me.

Hope that helps
