Bit of background:  Small Business Server 2003 running MS Exchange V6.5.7226.0.  No pop3 clients.

It is a basic default setup. We have a Default SMTP Server that, according to the 101 articles I have read is configured NOT to allow an open relay. We have the default SMTP connection (until today) that has been configured to use DNS to route mail directly to the recipients MS server.

Today I noticed that most of our outbound mail was stuck on retry. The connectors for each target domain just went to "retry".  I eventually narrowed this down to our connection attempts being rejected because our server is deemed to have an Open Relay. Sure enough, if I test it on www.dnsreport.com it fails for this reason.

I cannot see why this is the case, or why it has suddenly started to behave this way. According to the instructions I have read it should be OK.  To get around it and allow outbound mail I have switched of DNS routing for the mail and am using our ISPs default SMTP relay - but I really need to find out why we are an open relay.

Are there any other considerations to close this?   We have made zero changes to the Exchange setup in the last year.  The only thing we have done is enable a second eothernet adaptor and attached to that is a NetGear VPN Router. This is to set up a private connection to a client.  There are some static routes set up to enable traffic intended for the client to go through this adaptor.  I tried disabling all of this just to see if it helped - it didn't.

I am completely baffled
