Is this required to have https access to your exchange server? If not, why would there be a need? Thanks.

While an ISA server isn't a required for enabling SSL access to your Exchange server, it can be a good idea - simply because it, in many situations, will increase security.

You can with an ISA server do some fancy filtering, which isn't possible with many ordinary hardware-based firewalls.

But by using a perimeter network (aka DMZ) you could configure a pretty secure environment without an ISA server, it's really up to you which available topology you want to use.

To get an idea of posible secure OWA environments, I can recommend to read the below MS Whitepapers:

Using Microsoft Exchange 2000 Front-End Servers

Using ISA Server 2000 with Exchange Server 2003

Hope this helps !
