I know Symantec sells two versions of Small Business 9.0, one with groupware (Exchange) and the other without.

My question is, if I buy the standard version and install it on my Exchange server I know it wont scan Exchange. But since I get 5 licenses when I buy it would I be able to load the remaining 4 on workstations and be protected?

The standard version is much cheaper and we have very few Exchange users. So say a virus comes in through email will my server be safe? Then say that email goes through to my email and I get it on my system with Norton 9.0 installed will it detect that virus?

You will need to make sure that if you install the software on the SBS box that you exclude all the exchange directories (MDBDATA etc. etc) from scanning otherwise you could end up with a quarantined exx.log file and a toasted Exchange.
You can trust in the software to protect the client at the expense of the Exchange Server, but i wouldn't reccomend it.

That article is for Exchange 2000 and I have Exchange 2003 but I will read through it. I basically just need to know if the standard version will protect the Exchange server aginst being infected with viruses. If it will, then will the standard version protect the workstations if they are connecting to Exchange via RPC over HTTPS?

You're correct it's been written with Exchange 2000 in mind, but all information except the M: drive part also applies to Exchange 2003.

If the Standard version doesn't include Exchange then it will only protect your Exchange Server on a file-level basis. I recommend you install Exchange aware AV software on the Exchange Server.

So lets say I install the standard version on the Exchange version and it doesnt scan exchange. Basically I exclude the mailstore and files Exchange uses from scans. If a virus is stored in a mailbox which there obviously would be would my server be at risk since it wouldnt be opened?

Assuming the virus does come into Exchange and is just passed to the client wouldnt it not even matter. As long as I am scanning on the client leevl I should be fine right?
