We are installing Exchange 2000 into our Windows 2000 environment. Currently we have a root domain with one child domain. (This will be expanded to multiple child domains in the near future.) The MS documentation that came with the Exchange CD states that you must deploy the first instance of Exchange where the master schema resides (root domain). I have been told by someone else that the first instance of Exchange can be installed in the child domain and not the root domain and that you do not have to install an Exchange server up at the root. Will installing the first instance of Exchange in a child domain cause any issues?

I've seen it cause problems with Recipient policies. I wouldn't install it first in a subdomain.

Thank you for response. What type of Recipient policies have you seen?

Bryka:

If everything is performed accordingly I don't see any issues coming up.
