I want to upgrade my Windows 2000 domain controller to Windows 2003.  I am concerned about how this might affect my Exchange 2003 server which is running on a Windows 2003 member server.  Does the presence of Exch. 2003 change the standard procedure for this type of upgrade? Does anything change with adprep /forestprep and domainprep?  Any links to this type of upgrade scenario?

Thanks in advance

This is a very detailed walk through.

Hi Mark, thanks for responding. Great link, it sounds almost exactly like what I need to do except that Exchange 2003 is not running on a DC, it is running on a Server 2003 member server.  The part I'm concerned about is how the steps in the link you provided might differ in my own environment. Would I still run adprep /forest and /domain prep? etc. Maybe it doesn't make a difference but I am hoping for confirmation on this.
Thanks!

not totally sure. I would try this in a lab if possible.

You can find articles about upgrading AD, but even then there are things you need to consider that you haven't mentioned. It is preferrable to proceed in a manner that can be undone, but I understand that circumstances may not allow for that.

These are rhetorical questions - in other words, answer them for yourself and proceed.

Is the 2KDC the only DC in the environment?
Have you thought about installing a 2K3DC into the existing forest?
Are you planning on doing an in-place upgrade and if so what's your "Plan-B" if the upgrade doesn't go well?
Have you run the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer?

Thanks for the info.  I always take several full backups as well as make disk images using Acronis before doing anything.  There is only one DC and the organization will not purchase any new hardware so additional DC's are not an option. I believe I have cleared up the part that was concerning me.  I verified the AD schema version (Windows 2000) and the Exchange schema versions (Exchange 2003) and I can see that running forest and domainprep from the Windows Server 2003 CD should only impact AD, not Exchange.  Since Exchange is not running on the DC, I do not need to stop the Exchange services as suggested in the article.  The following link provided me with the steps for checking schema versions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/556086/en-us?spid=3198

In the event of a serious issue with no workaround I will most likely restore the Acronis disk image.

If anything unexpected happens I will post here for the benefit of anyone else looking for this information.

Thanks for all your responses.

Correct - forestprep and domainprep extend the AD schema in preparation for the Exchange installation. They do nothing to Exchange, even if you run them again later.
