I have Windows 98 users on a different subnet than my MS Exchange server. Using MS Outlook 2000 with MS Exchange Server 5.5 the 98 users must constantly hit retry to connect to the exchange server. Sometimes they must hit retry as many as three times to connect. The clients are WINS enabled. I tried a Lmhosts file with the exchange servers IP address and it still times out on the connection. I also have Windows NT users with tthe same setup and they work fine. Is there anything I can do to enable the Win 98 users to connect to the exchange server without it timing out?

Check DNS. Outlook looks to DNS first then WINS. Try adding an entry to the HOSTS file and see if that helps.

We have been having the same trouble for a long time... It seems like win98 is not renewing the IP addie... We have gotten around it by releasing and renewing the IP...

Once the IP is renewed , they usually get in right away... What's the expiration on the IP lease ?

Lorna,

Despite my reply, I would be interested in trying YOUR fix... I am hoping it works better than mine... Cud you please expand on your reply... I haven't messed around much with host files...

It works. The users had no problems once the hosts file was modified to include the exchange server.
Thanks

Great! Glad to be of help.

dleger: you can go to the command prompt or use notepad to edit the HOSTS file (no file extension). It is found in the WINDOWS directory on 95/98. In NT it is WINNT/SYSTEM32/DRIVERS/ETC. The file will give you an example of the correct format.

Good luck!
