My company has one Win2k DC, DNS, DHCP, Exch 2000 box. Our domain is shared with two others, however for the most part resources are not shared (only users of my company use our mail server). In the shared domain there is another Exch 2000 and an Exch 5.5 server associated with the two other companies.
Due to the size of the companies we do not have the resources for a test environment and/or another box to run a migration to Exchange 2003 so I will have to perform an in-place upgrade. The other Exch servers will not be upgraded at the same time.
Could I run into any problems with having an Exchange 5.5 server in the same domain? The Exch 5.5 server does not perform any role in my company however will it's influence in the domain cause a problem?
Any assistance is appreciated.

No it shouldn`t be a problem. With Windows 2003 DCs, if you have old clients eg Mac, Win98, WinNT, then don`t forget to turn off SMB signing to allow them access to resources on the domain.

I noticed one of the steps involved in the Exchange 2003 in-place upgrade is to 'Switch Exchange to Native Mode'. Is it necessary?

It's not a requirement to switch your Exchange organization to native mode, but a good idea (when you have remove the Exchange 5.5 box) since it provides additional benefits compared to a mixed mode organization.

I am going to perform the in-place upgrade tomorrow but having some last minute thoughts. Currently my server is hosting all the FSMO roles except the PDC. Should I offload these roles to another server before I start the upgrade?
Is there a validated checklist I should run through for the Windows 2k3 upgrade, I am fairly confident with the Exch 2k3 portion thanks to resources on this website.
Thanks! Caveman
