I just added a 2003 server to my 2000 domain.  Transfered all roles and everything is working great.  When I attempt to install Exchange 2007 it says a version od ADC is still installed using version 5.0 and I have to be at 5.2.   My Exchange 2000 server and Windows 2000 DC are on the same server.  I am sure my 20003 DC is doing all the DC and AD work now, so do I need to run dcpromo on my Win/Exch2000 server?  If so, will mail still flow while migrating to Exchange 2007.

Is that Windows 2k3 DC updated with R2? As far as I know you need to have at least Windows 2k3 SP 1 as a DC with the Schema Master FSMO role assigned to it as a minimum. Then you need to ensure that your AD, which you have to update during the Win2k3 DC install, is replicating properly to all of your other DCs that are running Windows 2000 Server. Usually you can force this by right clicking the connector for each other DC in the organization in AD Sites & Services from the Win2K3 DC.

Then, run the AD preparation scripts located on the E2k7 install folder/disk as directed in Henrik Walther's tutorial located here. From there it should be relatively smooth sailing. Good luck!

Edit: If worse comes to worse, and your company (or yourself) can afford it, make a support call to MS for install/transition/migration assistance. I did this for the first time I installed Exchange 2007 (because it is brand spankin new and documentation isn't full of all the possible quirks yet) and it now only helped get E2K7 installed into a relatively awkward AD environment but served as an excellent training source. Their support guys are very thorough and great to work with. It only costs $250 bucks, which is nothing compared to the manhours they save.
