Hello,

my company asked me to report if it is a goog idea to install exchange 2003 onto our windows 2000 server. They are worried about if active directory will work OK. Please do you have any article about this matter of have you tried it?

Thanks a lot.

Hello Raul,

Yes Exchange 2003 will work perfectly on Windows 2000 server, but be aware you will miss a few exciting features, when not using Windows 2003 as OS platform.

Hey Raul, I've been down the same road as well, and I did my research as far as the upgrade path goes and I was able to upgrade Exchange 2000 on a Windows 2000 box to Exchange 2003 with no problems at all.

Just make sure that if you are running any anti-virus for exchange that it is compatible with Exchange 2003, otherwise the Information Store will not start up.

Ex2003 runs really well on Windows 2000. Also, when you run the exchange deployment tools that launch with the cd, it will give you a checklist of prerequisites to complete before you upgrade. Stick to this and just make sure all other software you're using with Exchange is compatible with 2003.

Hi Raul,

we run E2K3 on Windows 2000 as well.
What you have to be aware is that for the installation it requires SP4 or SP3+hotfix for the servers you place it on and SP3 (if I remember correctly) for the AD servers.

So depending on your situation some work will need to be done on the windows servers (nothing on the licensing front, though).

Peter
