I have the same question. Seems strange to me that MS would release Windows Server 2003 months before Exchange Server 2003 and not allow E2K to install on Win2k3 Server. That seems to be what the upgrade/migration white pages say though...

Anyone else have any information?

You cannot install E2K on Windows 2003 Server. However, E2K can run in Windows 2003 domains (W2K3 DCs/GCs), but must be installed on a W2K Server. There is a utility, Adprep.exe, which will enable E2K to run in a W2K3 environment. Confused yet? See the E2K SP3 Deployment Guide. It has information on getting E2K to run in W2K3 forests.

A link to the specific page that talks about E2K in a 2003 domain would be very helpful.

I am 100 confused now...

MS Kb article 321648 more or less says you cannot install E2K on W2K3 servers, yet it then "suggests" that it can run on W2K3 Domain controllers.

Does this mean that Exchange can run on a W2K3 server as long as it is a DC, or does it mean that an E2K server can exist in a Windows 2003 AD structure?

Is there anywhere I can find a definitive answer on this?

Jon.

You cannot install Exch 2000 on ANY Windows 2003 server Member or DC. The biggest reason is that Exch 2000 does not understand IIS 6 which is req. for Exch to work!

You must upgrade to Exch 2003 before upgrading to Windows 2003.

Hmmmmm

Q1. CANT INSTALL E2K3 ?????

When you install IIS6 on windows 2003, it installs in IIS 5.0 Mode.

Q2. CANNOT INSTALL ON ALL SERVERS ???

On the windows 2003 local security policy of the server, diable the setting for no encryption of signed messages (always) and ( available) under the security settings to disabled

and access this computer from the network.

As a matter of fact i am running one for the last 3 months. It rocks.

Issue with the digital signing on windows 2003 OS to establish secure channel with the DC.

If we were to follow All KB articles and it worked the world is a better place to live.

The original question was whether or not you could install Exchange 2000 on Windows 2003, and to that, the answer is still "no."

- Exchange 2003 will run on either Windows 2000 (Service Pack 3 or later) or Windows 2003
- Exchange 2000 will only run (supported; I've heard of people "making" it work on Windows 2003; if it is possible, it is NOT supported by Microsoft) on Windows 2000
- Exchange 2000 can run in a Windows 2003 AD environment, but it still must be installed on a Windows 2000 server.

For more information, see:

Exchange Server 2003 Deployment Guide - http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/library , pp. 11-12

Exchange Server Compatibility with Windows Server 2003 - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810591 , 3rd paragraph, "Although Exchange 2000 is supported in a Windows Server 2003 environment, Exchange 2000 itself must be installed and run on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer. You cannot install and run Exchange 2000 on a Windows Server 2003-based computer. There are significant differences between Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 Server, including changes to Active Directory, Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service, and the Domain Name System (DNS) service. Many of these changes require more architectural work in Exchange than is reasonable in a service pack release. Because of improvements in the Active Directory features of Windows Server 2003, you can enhance the performance of Exchange 2000 when it is run in a Windows Server 2003 environment."

Regarding Betacam's posting:

Have you gotten Outlook Web Access working in your Exchange 2K on Windows 2K3 environment?
Postings in the newsgroup indicate OWA doesn't work when Exchange 2K is installed on Windows 2K3.

I'm not asking if this is Microsoft supported. I already know it isn't supported by Microsoft. RedHat doesn't support their badass server O.S. if you download it from them for free. You only get their support if you pony up 2 grand, but then you do get a nice installable binary.
