I set up Small Business Server and set the domain as 'domain.local'. They do not recommend setting the domain name as mycompany.com because it can cause confusion with DNS for external mycompany.com servers. No problem. However, the default SMTP address for users is username@domain.local.
This server is acting as an SMTP server, but it is receiving mail from cox.net via the POP3 Connector. Because of this setup, I needed to get their email straight. I opened the user's AD settings and I added an SMTP address of newaddress@cox.net and made it the default address. It is highlighted blue as it should be.
The problem is that even with these settings, the return address (as shown on the receiver's email header) is still username@domain.local.
Any ideas?

1. you can clear the automatically update e-mail adresses based on recipient policy in ad users and computers/user/e-mail adresses but if you have a lot of users it could take some time 2. add your domain name to the recipient policy on the exchange and set it as primary

Dennis,
Thanks for the info. Not to sound like a total dweeb, but how do I accomplish step 2? I am not familiar with recipient policies.
TIA, Randy

1.Start Exchange Systems Manager. 2.Click to expand the Recipients container. 3.Click Recipient Policies 4.Open the properties of the appropriate policy that is displayed in the right pane 5.Click the E-Mail Addresses tab, and then add any additional Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) addresses that you want the Exchange Server computer to host and set the new domain to be the primary

Dennis,
That was the deal. However, one final step is needed to make my selection stick. Go to the "Email Addresses" tab of " Username Properties" in the Active Directory Users and Computers applet. Uncheck the "Automatically update e-mail addresses based on recipient policy" check box. This allows each individual to have a default return address based on their needs, not the default of the Exchange Server.
Thanks for the help,
Randy Spangler

Make the change on the Recipient Policy and let the RUS update the users. If you uncheck the Automatically update... then you have to changed all users individually. If you change the Recipient Policy and force a RUS update, the change will occur within minutes.
POINT: It is not wise to uncheck that box unless you are prepared to perform more administrative tasks.
