my setup: Server 2000 running as the dc for an internal domain. I have a new server 2k3 on which I want to install Exchange 2k3. I do not want to set up the new srv2k3 as a dc of the internal domain due to conflicts with exchange on a dc. This means I need to install it as a member server of the local domain.

1)Can I have the server2k dc run as the global catalog for the External exchange server?

2)Possibly a stupid question: Idealy, I would have Exchange2k3 running on the new Server2k3 without a domain, just AD to house email/data. Can this be done? Can I have an external domain pointing to my Exchange server that is neither a dc nor part of a domain?

3)Where can I find helpful resources for drilling down into the details of such a configuration and best practice for working with only those two servers?

Thanks for any help.

1. Yes it's not a problem at all having an Exchange 2003 member server of a 2000 AD, this scenario is fully supported.

2. The Exchange needs to be part of an AD domain as it's heavily integrated with AD.
