Our company recently purchased new PC's. These PC's have Windows XP Professional and Office 2003 w/Business Contact Manager. For some reason throughout the day Outlook 2003 will lose connection to the Exchange Server.

While searching Google I found that someone else was having this issue but they never received a response. Microsoft.com doesn't seem to have anything in there knowledgebase about this issue.

I have noticed that this only happens on fresh installs of Office 2003. If we upgrade from Office 2000 or Office XP to Office 2003 the issue does not happen!

Do a CTRL and Right Click on the little Outlook icon in the system tray and select "Connection Status" That will give you some troubleshooting information. You can either post anything useful back here or do some of your own troubleshooting and then post back here with a supplementary question if required.

I did as you said and all connections were established so I clicked on the reconnect button. During that process I lost connection to the exchange server. I have a total of 6 different connections: 2 have the type of directory and 4 have the type of mail. The Req/Fail ratio is as follows: Directory 1 = 5/2, Directory 2 = 7/4, Mail 1 = 49/4, Mail 2 = 412/4, Mail 3 = 304/5 and Mail 4 = 9/4. The Avg Resp (I assume average response) is as follows: Directory 1 = 20, Directory 2 = 21, Mail 1 = 41, Mail 2 = 135, Mail 3 = 14 Mail 4 = 0.

All that I can make out of this is that Mail 2 is taking the longest for some reason. Since I am fairly new to Exchange Server I am not sure what the above info tells me.

I found out that this issue does not have anything to do with XP. It has to do with Office 2003. If I use Office XP (2002) we do have have any problems connecting to SBS2000.

Hi,

I am having the same problem. Last week the CEO came to one of our sys admins and said that his outlook was losing connection, actually at the bottom right where it usally says Online or Offline it is not saying anything. For some reason it is taking 4-5 minutes for mail to go from our mail server to his personal share folders. Does anyone know the reason for this or has anyone else had this problem? I really don't want to have to call microsoft about this until I can actually say its the only way.

Thanks for your time.

Hey All,

This maybe off topic, but take a look at the new features of Outlook 2003. I remember reading about how it has a way off managing network issues while connected to Exchange. If we all remember that if Outlook looses connectivity to Exchange it all locks up. For some reason I remember a new feature that will allow the user to weather brief network problems. Maybe something to look into if connectivity is coming up and down while in Outlook. Sorry if this is a dead end, but just wanted to see if it would help, we use Office 2000 still.

Good Luck!

Melry88 you are right Outlook 2003 does have a feature called "cached exchange mode". That does work, but I am getting complaints from fellow employees that they keep losing connection to the exchange server. I usually have to run Terminal Services and connect to the server and restart the Exchange Information Store Service. Within a 24 hour time the memory usage grows to 940MB.

Cached Exchange Mode does what it says, but it is still annoying when it could take 15 minutes before it connects.
