here is the scenario im trying to set up now there are 2 domains. lets call them domain a and domain b. they are connected to each other thru a vpn tunnel and dont share any kind of relationship/roles. i am trying to set up an exchange server on domain b so that we can get users on domain a off thier existing pop3 based mail. how can i accomplish this? what i tried for testing purposes was first set up an outlook client on domain b(the domain which hosts exchange) on a test machine and was able to see all users sucessfully when running the new mailuser setup wizard. when i tried it from domain a, i created a static dns entry in my workstation so that exchange1(name of the server) points to the correct internal ip. however when running the new mailuser wizard it fails to connect. could any of you give me some tips as to what is going on and some possible solutions to this? it would greatly be appreciated. thanks

Treat the second domain as external - so use Outlook Anywhere, split DNS system etc so that things resolve locally to the Exchange server. Simon.

Thanks for the reply, what do you mean by Split the DNS? Also will I get the same features running OA as I would if I were running it locally? Will there be any performance issues? thanks

Outlook Anywhere provides the full feature set of Outlook, that is the point of it. It runs over a single port - 443. Performance issues are zero, as it was designed for remote access use. Split DNS is where you have a local DNS zone that has DNS entries that point to local IP addresses rather than public DNS addresses. It will allow you to force the traffic through the VPN rather than over the internet - but when the clients are off site they continue to work correctly. I wrote an article on split DNS here: http://www.amset.info/netadmin/split-dns.asp Simon.
