I am a newbie with exchange server and am having problems beyond my ability to solve them. I have a win2k server with active directory and then a seperate win2k server with exchange 2k with sp3. The problem is that my exchange server recieves mail fine but will not send all messages in my queue keep retrying but failing because "The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt." I have tested my ability from inside my network to access port 25 of these servers and I can. What puzzles me even more is now my smtp servive generates an error in my event log of "Virtual Server 2: SMTP server cannot read metabase key MailQueueDir." whenever it starts. I have already created a connector and done most of the basic misc. setup. And my DNS server's zone is set to transfer unknown lookups to my ISP's dns servers. Please help. Thanks.

What you need to do is remove the second SMTP Virtual Server (if it exists) and use the default only with the default settings. Also, if this is the only Exchange server (5.5 or 2K), then remove the SMTP Connector.
E2K will deliver external mail without any configuration settings as long as your network configuration will allow - firewall, routers, dns, etc.
If the Virtual Server has a SMARTHOST configured, remove it. If the External DNS servers is configured on the SMTP VS, remove it. Just use default!
Test the server by performing NSLOOKUPs on remote domain's MX records and then telnet on port 25.
This should get you started

SMTP Virtual Server is part of IIS. Without IIS loaded and running during the Install of Exchange, there will be no mail flow.
Ex: Install W2K and IIS. See that SMTP exists within the Internet Admin tool. Install Exchange 2000. There is no more SMTP service on the Internet Admin Tool. It is moved to the Exchange System Manager. The Service is still there and is used by Exchange (just with more functionailty)
