with 2003 exchange we typically had 1 server that did everything. Now reading on microsoft says for a simple organization, all roles except edge transport can be installed on one server. Now if I am reading correctly, the edge tranport does all the external mail routing, spam and virus filtering. We NEED these features and cannot justify another server just for that role. Can this still be done on one server or is it absolutely required for 2? Thanks, Tim

The Edge server has to be on another server. The Edge server has to be installed on a box that is not a part of your domain and is placed in your DMZ. However the Edge server is not really required if you are already using a third party appliance for your spam and virus filtering. The Hub transport is capable of extrenal mail routing you don't have to have the Edge server to do this.

There's no workaround for this, the Edge Transport server role must be isntalled on a non-domain member as it uses ADAM and not Active directory to store Recipient and Configuration data and settings. However you don't necessarily need to deploy an Edge Transport server in order to take advantage of the spam filtering agents in Exchange 2007, as you can install these agents on the Hub Transport server in your organization. You do this using the install-AntispamAgents.ps1 script which can be found under C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Scripts. Bear in mind though that you will not be able to take advantage of all the spam filtering features, that are available on a dedicated Edge Transport server.
