I had a thread going about this a couple months ago but I'm still having the same problem.

During backup whether using NT Backup or a 3rd party software the back end Exchange server completely freezes up, becomes unresponsive and I'm forced to hard boot the server. This doesn't happen every time, approx 1 out 5 times the server freezes up. The priv1.edb files is > 11.5  GB

Still looking for answers

hi,

Please check your exchange application is updated, your OS.
Suggestion would be
run exbpa and extra (www.exbpa.com) and follow the recommendation

even you can run adplus for hang and crash but it is only read by software coding. i don't how to read it.
Just for your reference i am attaching this link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/286350

second thin what is the cpu utlization and who is utlizing more while taking the backup.

Hiya KB, from recollection you are the chap that was using either Veritas or NTBACKUP and the server would freeze randomly at a certain part of the backup - is this correct.

You had checked over all the hardware (including memory, and disk) - and you were using the Veritas Agent, but problems still arose.

What version of Exchange 2003 are you running, and also how many users do you have?

Thanks mate,

A

Thanks for the replies. Yes I am the same but I have been using NTbackup and Acronis Server backup which takes images. Problems are the same with both backup software. My OS is completely up to date with all patches and updates. Running Windows Server Enterprise 2003 SP 2. Exchange is also updated with SP 2. I've also followed the suggestions from exbpa.

I'm really stumped here.

Just a suggestion, but have you considered creating a new Information Store and Storage group then move all mailboxes to the new store? - then see what happens.

Although this is a little work, it will help eliminate a Database problem that ESEUtil or ISINTEG has missed (this can happen).

Cheers

A

Thanks again. I think I will try that. You don't happen to have a link with documentation for this process? I've never had to move to a new store before.

Hiya mate,

In the ESM - right click on your Exchange server and select NEW->Storage Group.

You will need to give it a name and choose the locations for the transaction logs and system path (this can be the same as the transaction logs) and should be in a different location to the existing paths for you existing store.

Next when you have done that - right click on the new storage group that you have created and select NEW->Mailbox store.

You will need to give is a name, then on the database tab configure a location for the database files (again away from the existing files - but with enough storage space for your mailboxes).

When that is up and running (mounted) allow for AD replication to take place, then in ADUC right click on the users you need to move, choose exchange tasks, move mailbox then follow the wizard and choose your new store.

Cheers

Thank you so much! Are there any special considerations since I have a front end and back end server?

Ran into a problem. I created the new storage group and then right clicked that to create new mailbox store and I get this error message:

This storage group already contains the maximum number of stores allowed.
Id no: c1034a7a

Just seached about this and it appears I am running Exchange Standard, not Enterprise. Can't afford to upgrade to Enterprise. I think I just saw a quote for around $7,000 for this.

Are there any ways to still accomplish this without creating a new mailbox store?

Ok, that seems a little costly for what I have as a hunch
Do you have a spare server?

Cheers

It is completely a test server right now. Not a DC or file server.

I just read that Exchange 2007 standard allows for 5 storage groups with each allowing 5 databases. I can't find an upgrade price but I'm looking. That might work too.

Thats one route - does this test server have the capacity to host your current mail environment - if so you could install it using the media that you have, move the mailboxes if that solves the problem then decommission the existing server?

No expenditure, and you will know one way or another?

Cheers

I installed Exchange on my test server and moved 1 mailbox to try things out. When I log in as this new user I can send and receive email just fine but if I hit the F5 refresh button I get the error message: 0x8004010F.

I've read through many, many postings about this error but nothing is helping. It appears to have something to do with the OAB but everything looks like it's setup fine.

HIya K, we can look at the offline setup, but how is the original problem?

Cheers

Hi Andy, I still have the original problem because I'm hesitant to transfer all my mailboxes to the new exchange server until I've resolved these errors. I've tried rebuilding the offline address book in ESM. I've also checked to make sure there is Offline address list listed in the properties of the new mailbox store.

Sorry to be such a pain, thanks for all your help.

Ok, looks like my error worked it self out after 2 days. You gotta love it when things fix themselves. I'll let you know how things go after I move all my mailboxes. Probably another week just to make sure I have everything configured the same on the new server.
