i created a group account, in ad, that i wanted to be able to recieve emails to. set it as a global distribution account. well it wasnt reciving mail so i deleted it and recreated it as a universal distrubution. still nothing.  if i create it with a different name it works fine. so it seems that the account is stuck out in excahnge somewhere.
any idea how to clear that up?

Sounds more of AD Replication issue - check the user account member of tab on all domain controllers.

What was the original name - was it clashing with some built-in group ?

Did you look in Message Tracking to see if Exchange was receiving them, and what was being done with them?

i did message tracking thats how i found it going to the specific users.

the address is businessbanking@mydomain.org
so as far as i see its not conflicting with any other account.

You said at first it wasn't receiving messages.  What would happen to them?  Would they bounce?  Did you check Message Tracking then?  Do you even care about that anymore?

You next said that if you used a different name it worked.  A different name for the list, or a different SMTP address?

Then you said you deleted and recreated the account and it still didn't work.  Same questions apply as before.  Did inbound messages bounce?  What did Message Tracking say?  Do you even care at this point?

Next you said all the messages are going to a single user.  Again, what did Message Tracking say?  Was the message going to the list and being distributed to that single person, or was the single person getting them directly?

I suggest that before you attempt to delete and recreate the account again, that you figure out what the underlying issue is.  The next time it acts in an unexpected manner, stop and look around.  Check your System and Application Logs.  Check Message Tracking.  Check the SMTP log.  Check the queues.  You aren't doing yourself any favors by guessing and taking action.

at first i didnt think it was recieving message... i check the queue and didnt see anything in it, and didnt seen anything in message tracking for that group.  i made sure it was getting past our spam/virus filter and it was. thats when i got an email from 1 user and he said he kept getting strange emails... checked them and he was getting all the test one... i checked message tracking for his account and sure enough every test i sent went to him. even when he wasnt part of the group. the single person was getting it directly... that makes me thing he's got the smtp address... checked and he doesnt.

Did you look at the properties of the group object to make sure you weren't forwarding directly to this single user (Exchange General tab --> Delivery Options)?

You're correct about that of course.  Let's go back to something you said earlier:
quote:

if i create it with a different name it works fine

I had asked:
quote:

You next said that if you used a different name it worked.  A different name for the list, or a different SMTP address?

What did you do then that worked?

all i did was create the group with a different name and address. instead of making it businessbanking@... i made it just business@
same process as i did with the one that didnt work.
so there has to be something with that address... did a few searches to make sure it wasnt being used somewhere else and its not.
getting ready to just make it business_banking and be done with it, i just know its going to bother me until i figure it out.

Some how this mystery is now started to look interesting to me.

i checked message tracking for his account and sure enough every test i sent went to him. even when he wasnt part of the group. the single person was getting it directly

Have you heard about the tool - LDP OR CSVDE - could you please dump the user and group information and paste it here - if you believe it is something you can only share with us personally - please email it at Email.Tushar@gmail.com

I definitely want to review this information and get back to you with a stern action plan.

One thing you can do is to open Outlook, start a new message, type in businessbanking@mydomain.org in the TO field, then click Check Names.  That will display the object to which AD thinks that address is linked.

when i do that i get the info that correct, show the people in the group, email show correctly and everything.

this is probably important and i think i forgot to mention that internally this works like it suppose to... its just when sending from an outside address

i'm looking at the ldp program, never used it so i need to figure out how to get what you need.

I figured it out. ended up being a problem with our Symantec program. It lost communication to our domain controller and was forwarding stuff to the address as it was listing before it lost communication so no changes were being updated to it. it started doing it to all address i would make a change to.
