I am trying to set up a little test lab at home. I can receive emails but I cannot send emails out.

I can send internally with no problems but once I enter an external email address I get this forwarded back to me

there was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
<myserver.mydomain.com #5.5.0 smtp;550 relaying mail to externaldomain.com is not allowed>

What am I missing and what should I be looking out for when trying this from home.

do you have your own ip address with you isp hosting an mx record for you or are you using a service like dyndns.
The way that you have the system setup you are trying to relay mail via another mail server which is generally not permitted on most mail servers as this is how spam is sent.
