hi,
I have a network with 1 server (w2k server) and 8 clients (w2k pro). last week I wanted to add Exchange server 2k, to be able to send internal e-mail, instant messaging and give every user his/her own email alias. I installed sp2 for win2k server, run forestprep and domainprep, checked if I installed NNTP, SMTP and DNS and it all seems fine. I installed E2k and with active directory users and computers I created mailboxes and enabled instant messaging. at my ISP I created a seperate e-mail alias for all the clients (under our own domain). The e-mails adresses I gave to the users are accordingly. On the workstations of the clients I installed outlook 2000 and added the services: 'exchange 2000 server' and 'internet-e-mail'. What I acctually want is that e-mail is being handeled by the server (send and receive internal and external). It doesn't seem to work. I can only get e-mail when I allow the workstation of the user to connect to the internet. Something I DON'T want.
Is there anyone who can tell me what to look for, or even what's going on in my configuration? Installing took only view hours, getting it to work for me already a week !

Hello m8y.
I'm new to the exchange game, but I'll see if I can help.
Firstly, have you configured your recipient policy for your organization?
Do you have a DNS server running? with the relevant entries (MX & A) for your exchange box?
Can you get any Internal email sending or receiving at all yet?

Also,
I think there is no need to setup the Outlook clients for Internet mail service. Just Exchange. Exchange will see that Internet email address is not held on local account, and should forward it on out to your ISP Over your SMTP connector. (I think)
In the Que you will see Outbound relay activate.

if you are still in trouble I don't know the answer but would suggest you view the network conversation (hand shaking) which will probably tell you alot. pull down the free trial appdancer.com to view network

1. You do NOT want clients that are using both Interntet Mail and Exchange in the SAME OL profile, it will cause problems.
2. You need an MX record somewhere on the net. If I send to anyone@abc.com, how would my mail to that address know how to get there unless that smtp domain, abc.com, could be resolved somewhere? Have your ISP host your MX record. MX Record = IP address of mail server.
