I have a test exchange server at home. I am optimum online customer. I understand about them blocking stuff and allowing to relay emails only through their email server. But I am still not able to send emails out of my exchange setup. I believe I am missing something silly here. Any help appreciated.

This is what I have tried so far:
In systems manager under "default smtp virtual server" properties, under delivery and then under advanced delivery, I have enter the smart host as "mail.optonline.net" I tried sending emails out, but they get stuck in the queue. :-(

I then also tried to setup SMTP connecto and configured the "forward mail through the following smarthost" I also entered the same "mail.optonline.net" address here. I still see mail getting stuck in the connector.

I then tried to send email using the telnet session on the dos. I could successfully send email that way. This only confirms that there is no connectivity issues.

What am I missing? Any help apprecaited.

Hello Pal,

Did you confirm from your service provider about the mail server they have? do they accept emails the way you are trying to configure?
Also make sure the Smarthost address is correct.
Better way of configuring Smarthost is using Connector instead of configuring it on SMTP Vs.
Also make sure you have Advanced SMTP commands enabled ERTN/TURN under Advanced tab of Connector.

Keep a track on Event Viewer also after you get all things confirmed.

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.

Optimum have a very poor service. But don't you think that successful sending of emails out using telnet is indication enough that things should be working the way I want to?

Yes, I have already made sure I am configuring the smart host correctlty, checked and re-checked many many times already.

Like in my original post, I have tried BOTH, smtp virtual server and smtp connector with smarthost settings. None of them works. I am still curious how is a connector better then virtual server, what is the difference, but I guess this would be on a different thread.

I will check the advanced smtp commands and enable them like you suggested and keep an eye on the event viewer. I hope I find something.

To me the mails are going out just fine using telnet session, something very simple is missing while configuring the same on the exchange server.

Would apprecaite anymore suggestions?

Thanks

Also make sure your is there is any authentication required by the ISP smarthost and all the DNS entries are correct.

Hi

Do you have MX records for your domain if not check if remote mail server is doing reverse query as yours is test server and if remote server is doing remote query your mails will fail to go.

Thanks

Here is a page that might help you on setting up your email server with Optimum.

Hosting a Mail Server with Optimum OnlineŽ Boost and DDNS

I have a question also. This weekend I will be changing my email server to Optimum. I current am getting emails through my local exchange 2000 server and I have DSL.

I don't know much about setting up an exchange server so I am not sure how to do the switch over since someone else setup this exchange server. I know how to change my main IP for my network. Then do I just move the DNS over to Optimum and plug in the Optimum internet cable and it will work? Or do I have to change some settings in my MS exchange server?

Thanks

I setup an email server using Cablvision and it works well. You do need to make sure you open port 25 by using their control panel on their website.

I use optimum boost with a static IP so maybe this is different for you but I did not not have to use the smarthost on exchange. I did try it and that actually blocked me from being able to send emails.
