hello everyone. thank in advance for your help...
i work with exchange 2003. i have 2 windows2003 domain controllers and i need to replace them with new machines. i have done all that needs to be done and replaced one of the DC. all well- replication, etc... after that, e-mails just don't go out. they stuck in the queue and dows not routed out. only when i shutdown the new DC or demote it back to member server e-mails start to routed out. what am i missing ?
1. the new DC is exactly with the same name and IP address as the old one. is it ok or is it better to change the DC name ?
2. when i think about it' i do not remember if the new DC is configures in the directory access tab. does it needs to be automatically or can i add it manualy? what is the better way ?
3. is it necessary to restart all exchange services after the new DC installation?
thank you
itay

Hello Itay,

The DC that you replaced was the 1st DC (root DC) ?
What were the roles assigned to replaced DC ?
After Replication have you transfered the roles ?
By default when you setup AD, the root DC that gets created have all the FSMO roles, including GC.
On which DC did you install Exchange?

Also check which is your GC server, using active directory sites and services > sites > default first site > servers > ser01 > NTDS Settings > Properties and see if Global Catlog is enabled or not.. check this on both servers.

There is need of more clerification about your scenario.

Hope to see ur reply soon.

Regards,
Wasim

hello Wasim.
1. before demoting, i have transferred all fsmo and GC to the remaining DC
2. after the installation of the new DC i did not transfered back any fsmo to him but i made him another GC.
3. the exchange is not installed on any DC, but on a domain member server.
thanks

Can you check if exchange is using proper your new DC as GC server.

go to Fist administrative group > servers > serv01 > properties > Directory Access tab.

By Default exchange auto discovers GC, but even on safer side its better to check it and get confirmed.
as far as i know there is no such hard and fast requirement of restarting exchange services. but even then if you like to give a try u can go ahead.

No its not the problem, by default exchange will consider the 1st DC of forest for its GC. and i hope 1st DC is where you have installed exchange..
If you put New DC offline, then things work?

Yes, I know you installed on Member server, but when you run domainPrep it contact DC.
When you put New DC online what events get logged? might be possible something will be helpfull from there.
Also check the NDR Error if any.

all prep was running good. i don't have something bad in eventlog.
i don't get any NDR.
the massge in the tracking center is going all the way to "message routed and queued for remote delivery". and stops there
is there anything else i need to do on the new DC ? give him a role? install exchange something on him ?

I guess you dont have to do anything, as new DC is not holding any mail-enabled objects. I will need to make a labtest scenario like urs to troubleshoot further..
