can you post any error messages the pop3 clients are receiving when trying to connect?

how do you have your relaying setup?
do you have the box checked for "Allow all computers which sucessfully authenticate to relay"
Did you specify which domains can relay?
What settings do you have for Access Control?
In the event log are there any events that you can tie to a pop3 client trying to connect?
this could be a starting point for you http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;200788
We'll get you up and running here shortly.

i have the smtp settings just like the MS white papers say to do for relaying. for domains able to relay ive experimented with none, my home domain, and the ip and nothing seems to help.
now, i have a feeling that it COULD be the router/cisco 2500 blocking/masking the port, when i telnet into the exchange server from outside the network its unreachable, but from inside it works fine. ive set it to DMZ a couple hours ago and havnt been able to test it just yet. could the port being masked ( not blocked cause from inside the network i can send mail anywhere i want ) have anything to do with it?

alright new devolpement..!
in the cleint i select, this server requires auth...
and under the exchange settings for the smtp auth, i have anon and basic ONLY. that seems to fix it. :-)
now are there any problems with these settings that any of you can see?

Lets look at your settings: list any diferences you may have to the below
Open SMTP Connector Properties General Tab: Use DNS checked and and bridgehead servers added
Address Space: SMTP *
Delivery Restrictions: Accepted
Open SMTP Virtual Server
Access Tab\Relay: Only the listed servers checked and allow all computers... checked (no computers listed)
Access Tab\Authenication: Anon, Basic and Integrated windows are checked
Access Tab\Connection: All except the list below checked (no computers listed)
Delivery Tab\Outbound Security: Anonymous access checked.
any other tabs if you made any changes what are they?

my settings are exactly those.
here's whats going on, now that i understand it better :-)
i need both imap4 and pop3 running.
when i change integrated windows auth to unchecked and turn on basic, pop3 works, but then imap4 stops to work. but then i get people relaying off me. BUT i can send out though pop3 and what not, just not imap4
now when i change those back, i have to reboot to clear out the queue or sent masseges wont send. and its back to no pop3 but imap4 works....
i cannot get out of this vicious cycle.
