Can I convert a Single Mailbox role server to "Active clustered mailbox role" for my CCR purpose?

I am thinking many ways for my customer scenario -

They currently have a production exchange 2003 server and a spare hardware for Exchange 2007. So I setup exchange 2007 in the spare server as "mailbox role" and move all mailbox from exchange 2003 and then convert this new exchange 2007 from "mailbox role" to "active clustered mailbox role" so that I can decommision exchange 2003, then reuse for exchange 2007 and setup as "passive clustered mailbox role.

Possible?

I think you can directly configure it as a cluster and after the 2003 is decommisioned you add in the cluster a passive node

You cannot convert an Exchange 2007 mailbox server to a clustered mailbox server node. You must uninstall the Exchange 2007 binaries > form the cluster and then install the Active clustered mailbox server role.

Thanks.
I am coming back to my old question now. So it is suggested to have two free servers for CCR instead of playing around with one spare and one exchange 2003 production "waiting to be free - rather decommisioned"  for passive cluster mailbox in  my cluster setup (since this is a real customer production scenario).

In a nutshell, I was cracking my head figuring out on how to manage my CCR project for this customer (with one spare server and one production exchange 2003) - :)

Although you don't need to install the passive CCR node immediately, yes I would suggest using an extra box.
